No woman wants to hear that the very essence of her femininity is damaged. Infertile. Barren. The words sound sterile and terrifying. For years scientists and doctors were trying to tackle the problem of infertility and a powerful solution was found: invitro-fertilization. Unfortunately, that solution only works if you have a uterus. But what if a woman doesn’t have a uterus? The idea of being able to become pregnant was impossible, until now.
Science and medicine have now successfully impregnated a woman who received a uterus transplant. Yes, a cadaver uterus of another woman was placed inside of her and she is now pregnant. The very idea is incredible but maybe even a little bit scary. Women who have had hysterectomies before they have had children due to uterine cancer or other complications such as being born without a uterine (which is the case of this uterine transplant pregnancy) have the hope that this procedure has not only been done, but was successful. The possibilities that this opens up for women is one that I cannot wait to hear and learn more about in the coming years.
